How Drone Scouting Works: From Flight to Prescription Map
How It Works
Julian Chacon

Step 1: Book Your Flight
The process starts with a five-minute booking. You tell us your field size, crop type, and what data you need. We confirm a flight window based on weather and crop stage. Most bookings are scheduled within a week.
Step 2: We Fly Your Fields
Our DJI Mavic 3 Multispectral drone captures high-resolution RGB and near-infrared imagery across every acre. The multispectral sensor collects data in four spectral bands plus visible light, giving us the raw data needed to assess crop health, detect weed pressure, and identify problem zones that are invisible from ground level.
A typical 500-acre field takes roughly 45 minutes of flight time. The drone flies pre-programmed grid patterns at consistent altitude, ensuring complete coverage with no gaps.
Step 3: AI Weed Analysis
Back at base, the imagery goes through our computer vision pipeline. Algorithms classify weed species, map density zones, and flag problem areas. The system achieves 94% weed detection accuracy based on the same methods validated in Iowa State University field trials. You get a clear picture of exactly where your weeds are, how dense they are, and what species are present.
The turnaround from flight to prescription map was faster than I expected. We had actionable data in our sprayer controller within two days.
Step 4: Your Prescription Map
The final deliverable is a prescription map in shapefile or PDF format. The shapefile loads directly into your variable-rate sprayer controller. It tells your equipment exactly where to apply herbicide, at what rate, and where to skip entirely. No more guessing, no more blanket spraying.
Most jobs are completed start to finish in under 48 hours from flight to map delivery. For Kansas grain farmers running 500 to 2,500 acres, this turnaround means you can scout and spray in the same week, keeping your weed management on schedule and your costs under control.
