Weed Resistance Is Getting Worse — Here’s What You Can Do

Weed Management
Julian Chacon

The Resistance Problem in Kansas

Herbicide-resistant weeds are no longer a future concern. They are a present reality on Kansas farms. Waterhemp, Palmer amaranth, and kochia have developed resistance to multiple herbicide groups including glyphosate, ALS inhibitors, and PPO inhibitors. The Weed Science Society of America now lists over 270 confirmed resistant weed species in the United States.

The core problem is simple. When you apply the same herbicide at the same rate across an entire field, you create intense selection pressure. The few weeds that survive carry resistance genes and reproduce. Within a few seasons, resistant populations dominate. Blanket spraying at flat rates accelerates this cycle.

How Precision Scouting Slows Resistance

Precision weed scouting changes the equation in two critical ways. First, by mapping actual weed locations and species, you can match the right herbicide to the right weed at the right rate. Second, by reducing overall herbicide volume applied across the field, you reduce selection pressure on weed populations in low-density zones.

Research from university extension programs confirms that site-specific weed management is one of the most effective strategies for delaying resistance development. When you spray only where weeds are present at rates calibrated to actual density, you maintain herbicide efficacy longer and extend the useful life of your chemistry.

We had waterhemp patches that were not responding to our standard program. The drone maps helped us identify exactly where the resistant populations were concentrated so we could target them differently.

A Smarter Long-Term Strategy

Resistance management is not just about this season. It is about protecting your ability to control weeds five and ten years from now. Every acre you scout with drones and treat with precision application is an acre where you are slowing resistance development while saving money today.

Combine drone scouting with crop rotation, cover crops, and integrated weed management practices and you build a system that keeps your fields productive and your herbicide options open for the long haul.
